Moving to a new house? 10 tips to get you started

Moving to a new house is one of life’s most stressful events.  To assist you in this process, we have put together some simple tips to help you create a stress-free move.

Create a moving box

Before you even get started, create a dedicated box that you can take from room to room with all the essentials in it- packing tape, coloured paper for colour coding, labels, scissors, stanley knife and pens for labelling. Having all these supplies in one central location will save you from always wondering- where is the packing tape?

Book your removalist

Booking your removalist early is critical. Many removalists have online forms to provide you with a quick estimate of costs to help you with your budgeting- so look around to find the best deal. You want to find a removalist that is reliable, professional, and focused on delivering excellent customer service- after all, you are trusting them with your most precious belongings.

Find the best boxes

Get the best quality packing boxes you can find. Boxes should be cardboard with a sturdy base so that nothing falls out of the bottom. You will find boxes in a range of formats including tea chest cartons, port-a-robes, wine cartons, computer monitor cartons and many others to suit your individual needs. Double-check though first whether your removalist package includes them! You can also hire boxes if you are not planning on moving again for a while!

Colour code your packing

Colour coding your boxes with coloured sheets of paper will help you easily identify what goes where in your new home and assist with unpacking. You can create a simple system easily- blue for the kitchen, green for the main bedroom, pink for lounge room etc.

Outsource your packing

If you do not have time to do the packing yourself- outsource it and bring in the professional packers. These professionals will come in and like magicians and help you with this tedious task. It may cost a little extra but might just be the help you need to manage the move!

Pack a bag of essentials

Create a bag with all your essentials for each member of your family to get you through the first couple of days. By doing this you will ensure you have quick access to everything you need- such as toiletries, clothes, pyjamas, and items for the kids such as toys and school supplies. If you have pets- do not forget to pack their essentials!

Create a simple meal planner

Whilst you are moving and packing up, cooking meals will be a hassle and the last thing on your mind. Putting together a simple meal planner will ensure you have something readily available for meals. Think of meal ideas that will keep your washing up to a minimum though. When everything fails though- order home delivery.

Sketch plan

Create a sketch plan of where you want your furniture items placed around your new home. This will provide a guide to your removalists exactly where you want everything placed. Put this plan in a central location- such as the front entry so everybody can see it. Do not forget to add the locations for any hanging items, such as heavy artworks and mirrors.

Unpack straightaway

Whilst it might be optimistic, start unpacking as soon as you arrive at your new home. If can enlist any help with this process- now is the time to ask for assistance! If you have colour coded your packing boxes, this process will be a little simpler.

Update your details

Do not forget to have your mail re-directed and update your important address details such as your driver’s licence and registration as soon as you move. This is always something that gets overlooked and you do not want a costly fine if you happen to miss your registration renewal notice.

And finally, put your feet up and enjoy the new digs. You deserve it!
